Poor diet and physical inactivity are the most common risk factors for heart disease. The role of diet and nutrition is influenced by a range of social, cultural, economic and physiological factors, including the available food supply and cost.

The role of fat intake in heart disease is now fairly clearly established. The direct protective effect of specific diets or dietary changes is less clear but there are general health benefits in promoting healthy eating.

Overweight and obesity are risk factors for heart disease. Strategies to reduce weight involve changes to behaviour, physical activity, diet and combinations of all three. Dietary changes include salt reduction, dietary fibre increase, and an adequate intake of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Studies show that Omega 3 may reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, aid in lowering blood pressure, prevent arrhythmia, prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries, and may prevent sudden cardiac death.

A Healthy Future

If you’re not taking an Omega 3 supplement yet, chances are you’re not getting enough of it in your diet. It is an essential fatty acid, meaning your body needs it but can’t create it on its own.

Unless you have a diet that is extremely high in fish intake, an Omega 3 supplement is your only hope of getting enough Omega 3 in your diet.

Heart Attacks

Studies have shown that Omega 3 may prevent heart attacks because it slows the buildup of plaque in the arteries. When your arteries are free of plaque, your blood is able to flow normally, avoiding heart complications.

Patients who do take Omega 3 and who have suffered from heart attacks seem to suffer heart attacks that are less severe than those who are not taking an Omega 3 at all

Herbalifeline not only includes premium-grade, deodorized fish oil, it is also rich in vitamin E for maximum antioxidant benefit, and selenium, a health-protecting mineral. Herbalifeline’s newly designed capsule is easier to swallow.

Too little calcium can weaken bones.

If the body notices that not enough calcium is circulating in the blood, it will use hormones to reduce the amount put out by the kidneys in the urine. If not enough calcium is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, calcium will be taken from the bones.

If your dietary intake of calcium is constantly low, your body will eventually remove so much calcium from the skeleton that your bones will become weak and brittle.

Calcium needs vary throughout life.
The recommended dietary intake of calcium is different for people of different ages and life stages:

Babies – from 7–12 months, babies are estimated to need 270mg per day if breastfed and 350mg per day if bottle fed. The calcium in infant formula may not be absorbed as efficiently as that found in breast milk. For children aged 1–3 years, the amount needed rises to 500mg per day.

Young children – skeletal tissue is constantly growing, so young children have high calcium needs. Children aged 4–8 years need around 700mg per day. This rises to 1,000mg per day for those aged 9–11 years.

Pre-teens and teenagers – puberty prompts a growth spurt. This group needs more calcium, with a recommended dietary intake of 1,300mg per day for both boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18 years.

Peak bone mass years – from before the onset of puberty to around the mid-20s, the skeleton increases its bone mass. If the skeleton is strengthened with enough calcium during these years, diseases like osteoporosis in the later years are thought to be less likely. During mid-life, women and men both need around 1,000mg per day.

Pregnant women – although a developing baby needs a lot of calcium and this is taken from the mother’s bones, most women rapidly replace this bone loss once the baby has stopped breastfeeding. There is no additional dietary calcium requirement for pregnancy, except for the pregnant adolescent, who requires an additional 1,300mg per day of calcium to meet the requirements of both her own growth and the foetus.

Breastfeeding women – there is no increased requirement for calcium during breastfeeding, except for the breastfeeding adolescent, who needs an additional 1,300mg per day.

Elderly people – as we age, the skeleton loses calcium. Women lose more calcium from their bones in the five years around the age of menopause. However, both men and women lose bone mass as they grow older and need to ensure an adequate amount of calcium in their diet to offset these losses. While a diet high in calcium cannot reverse age-related bone loss, it can slow down the process. The recommended dietary intake for calcium is 1,300mg per day for women over the age of 50 years and men over the age of 70 years.

Non-Caucasian populations – populations with smaller frame sizes may need less calcium than Caucasian populations, who have larger frame sizes and higher intakes of animal foods, caffeine and salt.

Appetite suppressants are designed to keep people from eating too much by stopping them from feeling hungry. The theory is that, when a person does not feel hungry, he or she will not eat, and so weight loss will occur. The calories that are being burned by a person will be greater than the calories that are being consumed. Whether appetite suppressants really work is something that many people have questioned for years. There are individuals who feel that they work well, and individuals who feel that they are not keeping up with the promises that they make to the general public.

Many people will eat because they are out with others who are eating, as well. For people who eat for reasons other than hunger, appetite suppressants may not be as effective. They may work to stop some of the eating, because people will be more full. However, those individuals who eat for other reasons often already feel full when they are eating.

Much of the problem for them is not one of feeling hungry too often, but of having needs that are not being met, which they are then trying to fill with food. Appetite suppressants are not likely to work very well for these people simply because of the reasons behind their eating, but they can be quite effective for other individuals who need a way to calm their hunger.

Aloe is cherished for its wound-healing and pain-relieving effects. Many people keep an aloe plant in their kitchen so it is readily available to treat burns from grease splatter or hot utensils. (Severe burns require treatment by a physician.) Aloe is even safe for use on children.

Aloe contains slippery, slimy constituents that have a demulcent (soothing) effect, as well as a vulnerary (wound-healing) effect. An early study published in the International Journal of Dermatology in 1973 describes the effects of aloe vera gel applied topically on leg ulcers. Each of the three patients studied had a serious raw, open sore on a leg that persisted for 5 to 15 years. (These ulcers commonly occur in individuals with diabetes, those who have problems with blood circulation, and those who are bedridden.) After aloe was repeatedly applied to the ulcers, they healed completely in two patients; the third patient’s ulcer showed significant improvement.

More recent studies have shown similar results. Scientists are investigating the use of aloe in treating cancer and certain blood diseases, particularly those associated with low white blood cell counts, such as leukemia. In fact, veterinarians use extracts from the aloe plant to treat cancer and feline leukemia in their animal patients. It is thought that a molecule in the aloe gel, known as acemannan, stimulates the body to produce disease-fighting white blood cells, particularly macrophages. The word macrophage means “big eater” — macrophages engulf and digest unwanted substances, such as bacteria and viruses, in the bloodstream and tissues. Macrophages also release substances that battle tumor cells and fight infection.

Another constituent of aloe, aloin, also is being studied for its ability to prevent breast and ovarian cancer cells from growing. Both acemannan and aloin show promise in their ability to help fight cancer, but much more research is needed to know how and when to use aloe for this purpose.

Modern clinical studies show that aloe is one of the best herbs for soothing skin and healing burns, rashes, frostbite, and severe wounds. It also is used to treat eczema, dandruff, acne, ringworm, gum disease, and poison oak and ivy.

Aloe works by inhibiting formation of tissue-injuring compounds that gather at the site of a skin injury. The plant contains chrysophanic acid, which is highly effective in healing abrasions.

Aloe is found commercially in a number of creams and lotions for softening and moisturizing the skin, such as Herbalife Herbal Aloe Shampoo and Herbal Aloe Conditioner.

Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day primarily due to it breaking the overnight fasting period, replenishing your supply of glucose and providing other essential nutrients to keep your energy levels up throughout the day.

Skipping breakfast
Extensive research in Australia and overseas has found:

•	Many people who skip breakfast are significantly heavier than those who eat breakfast.
•	Skipping breakfast can diminish mental performance. Breakfast helps learning, as you are better able to pay attention and are more interested in learning.
•	Eating high fibre breakfast cereals reduces fatigue.
•	People who eat an inadequate breakfast are more likely to make poor food choices for the rest of the day and in the long term.
•	People who eat breakfast have more nutritious diets than people who skip breakfast. They also have better eating habits as they are less likely to be hungry for snacks during the day.

‘Going without’ becomes more common with advancing age – approximately 15 per cent of teenagers and one-third of adults don’t eat breakfast.

Why we skip breakfast. Some common reasons for skipping breakfast include:
•	Not enough time
•	Too tired to bother
•	Wanting to spend the extra time dozing in bed
•	No readily available breakfast foods in the house.

A healthy breakfast may reduce risk of illness. Compared to people who regularly eat breakfast, those who skip breakfast tend to consume fewer kilojoules overall and yet they experience the same rates of overweight and obesity.

There are a number of theories for this. There is some evidence that large meals are more likely to lead to weight gain than smaller, more frequent meals. This is because excess kilojoules eaten during one sitting are stored as body fat, once the glycogen storage areas are full. People who skip breakfast are usually ravenous by lunchtime and tend to eat more to compensate.

Snacking
People who skip breakfast tend to nibble on snacks during the mid-morning. This can be a problem if those snacks are low in fibre, vitamins and minerals but high in fat and salt. Without the extra energy that breakfast can offer, some breakfast skippers feel lethargic and turn to coffee to get them through the morning.

It is has been widely publicized that both women and men are in diabolical need of a healthy lifestyle but the number one excuse for the lack thereof is time… So what has society opted for as a time saver for ‘food nutrients’? Supplements..

Up until recently pregnancy and supplements were never to be mixed although in a recent study it has been discovered that taking folic acid for at least one year before conception can reduce a female’s risk of a premature birth by 70%. Babies born prematurely are less likely to survive than full-term babies and are more likely to have breathing difficulties and learning or developmental disabilities. Currently, there are no effective methods of prevention or treatment of premature (preterm) birth, but previous studies have suggested that lower concentrations of foliate (folic acid) are associated with shorter duration of pregnancy.

Pregnant women should also be aiming to get around 2000 mg of calcium a day, especially during the first and last trimesters. On average women are not attaining this through their daily intake of food alone. A fetus accumulates calcium rapidly through the first and last trimesters. Studies have also revealed that women who supplement with calcium during pregnancy have a reduced incidence of high blood pressure and preclampsia.

Your body needs iron as it is essential for making hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to other cells. It also helps you maintain a healthy immune system.

During pregnancy you need a lot more iron due to the fact that when you’re pregnant, the amount of blood in your body increases until you have almost 50 percent more blood than usual, so you need more iron to make more hemoglobin. You need extra iron for your growing baby and placenta, especially in the second and third trimester. And in most cases many women need more iron during pregnancy just because they start their pregnancy with insufficient stores of iron.

THE ALL IN ONE SOLUTION:

Herbalife Formula 2 Multivitamin Complex available at DietConversion.com

Formula 2 Multivitamin Complex contains all three of these essential nutrients required before, during and after pregnancy. It is a Cellular Nutrition-powered multivitamin with over 20 essential nutrients and antioxidants, including folic acid, calcium and iron.

Is Herbalife Formula 2 Multivitamin Complex the only supplement that can be taken during pregnancy?

A: Herbalife nutrition products (including Formulas 1,2,3) and the targeted nutrition products are not only safe for use during pregnancy but are used by many pregnant women around the world as a source of great, healthy, nutritional supplementation in addition to a healthy diet.
